From a sanitary and an economical point of view, infectious diseases are one of the most important problems in pisciculture. The rapid establishment of the diagnosis of diseased animals, as well as the detection of carrier fish can provide a highly eficiency system to prevent these diseases. In the last decades, several diagnostic methods based on genetic technology have been developed, but PCR is more frecuently used than any other nucleic acid based techniques. The purpose of this review is to examinate the use of PCR as an approach to diagnosis of fish pathogens.
